The night I’m released from prison, she’s in my bed.
It’s been eight years since I touched a woman, and the Native American beauty is half-dressed, beaten, bruised, and devastatingly exquisite.
We’re toxic together, but we want the same things. Blood. Vengeance.
Violent relief in a warm body.
Beneath her touch, I’m alive.
Against her skin, I’m redeemed.
Buried inside her, I forget the past.
Until the past takes her from me.
Prison made me cold, but losing Raina makes me cruel. Ruthless. Unforgiving.
I killed before. For her, I’ll kill again.
I’ll end this once and for all or die in my boots.
“Sadness is a river of splintered glass that cuts between the soul and body.”
Lorne and Raina have pain, sadness, and loss in common. As well as a mutual enemy. Both newly free but bound by their past, in each other, they see all the walls they’ve built to hide from the world and the ways to tear them down.
Vengeance is what they agree on. But love? That’s a harder maze to navigate.
There is something about the way this author tells a dark story. Focusing on the main couple, while using the secondary characters to keep you guessing.
Full of chemistry and intense heat between Lorne and Raina, the story is bookended by dramatic, fast-paced, plot-driven scenes that leave your pulse racing. The middle slows, using more introspection and narration to showcase their forming relationship—and let’s face it, smoking hot sex. While individually I loved all of the pieces, when put together in that way, the pacing felt uneven.
The end, though, was an all-questions-answered, immensely satisfying conclusion to an emotionally wrought series. Proving this:
“The things you carry today will strengthen you tomorrow.”
New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author, Pam Godwin, lives in the Midwest with her husband, their two children, and a foul mouthed parrot. When she ran away, she traveled fourteen countries across five continents, attended three universities, and married the vocalist of her favorite rock band.
Java, tobacco, and dark romance novels are her favorite indulgences, and might be considered more unhealthy than her aversion to sleeping, eating meat, and dolls with blinking eyes.
