The Riviera means indulgence—if you’ve got money. For Sadie Reynolds, a down-on-her-luck student, the Riviera means dingy hostels and back streets. Discretion (The Dumonts, #1)Discretion by Karina Halle
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3 out of 5 ‘I really wanted to like this’ Stars

As a huge Karina Halle fan, I truly wanted to like this. I had super high hopes going into it, but it just fell flat -splat!

It’s the same old story of poor girl meets an uber-rich, handsome guy and they fall in love but people from either side of girl or boy get in the way of their happily ever after. I feel like this premise has been done time and time again and after a while, it’s just meh. The story was super predictable and the main characters, Olivier and Sadie, lacked…I don’t know….they just lacked. They lacked depth and personality. Olivier–I couldn’t see what was so dazzling about him. There wasn’t much description towards his looks that I could see him in my mind’s eye- and if there was description it obviously didn’t resonate with me because I couldn’t for the life of me picture this guy. His personality was alright. Nice guy. Not at all what you would think a multi-million dollar hotelier would act like.

And Sadie. Her character has been done so many times. Super naive. Young, inexperienced. Blah blah blah. I couldn’t picture her either if I’m being honest. They were just faceless characters and I went through the motions of reading their story. At about 50% into the story, I was ready for it to be over. I didn’t see what was so special about Sadie that had Olivier so enthralled with her. I get that she wasn’t after or impressed by his money, and she was “different” from all the other girls he was with BUT she was from Seattle, Washington and he was from France. He dated models and actresses. She lives in a trailer park. Of course, they are super different and worlds apart. They were also several years apart in age….he was like 30 years old and she was like 23 or 24 years old. Very different stages in life.

Anyway…so if I’m so negative about most of the story, how did it get 3 stars you’re wondering. It got three stars because I truly believe there was a lot of thought and effort into this story. I’m not going to totally down the author for her efforts. This particular story just did not do it for ME. That’s it. And I know this is the first in the Dumont series but I have no intention of reading the rest of this series mainly because I’m not really interested to find out what happens. I have no interest in any of the secondary characters and really I don’t want to know how it turns out for the main characters either. I’m just not that invested. None of the secondary characters sparked the “ooo I can’t wait to read their story” spark.

Also, this book does NOT end on a cliffhanger but gives you the impression that it will continue in the second installment. Whether it be with a second couple and the previous main characters in the background or another full story about the previous main characters. Either way, it’s a no go for me.

Happy Reading!!

A LESSON IN THORNS (Thornchapel #1)
Amazon INTL:
Apple Books:

I’m an outcast and a loner, named for death itself. Fate wasn’t supposed to have plans for me.

But then she came back—the girl I once kissed in a thorn-covered chapel in the woods. She came back, and I could no more resist her than I could pry out my own heart. And by some trick of fate, she wants me as much as I want her. The only problem? She also wants the man who owns Thornchapel, Auden Guest.

And so do I.

Eight years ago, I did something to Auden, something terrible. He hurt me back the only way he knew how, and so here we are: our hatred seasoned with pain and my loneliness seasoned with longing. The only thing we can agree on is Proserpina Markham, and she wants us to find a way to be together—all three of us.

If Auden wants to earn her as his submissive, then he has to earn me as well.

But with the discovery of bones behind the altar and the carnal revel of Beltane fast approaching, it’s becoming clear that Thornchapel’s secrets are much deeper and older than any of us could have ever guessed. And no matter how bright and merry a feast of sparks may be, it’s always followed by ashes.

And darkness.

Shame, hot and prickling, needles everywhere at my face and chest and belly as I begin to bend down to the floor. The cool air that caresses my pussy is now everywhere as the position begins to expose my most secret flesh, and there’s no pretending away the reality of what I’m doing. I’m doing something I’ve never done before, I’m offering up the filthiest part of me for inspection, and despite everything the three of us have shared in the past twenty-four hours, I’m flooded with shame. It’s real shame now, not play-shame, and my safe word floats to the top of my mind, a buoy in the clear waters.

I don’t want to safe out right now, I’m nowhere near the edge, but it’s nice to have it there all the same. Reassuring. There’s nothing they can do that I can’t stop.

And anyway, this is who I am—who I’ve been growing into ever since I found the words to define it.

#AubreysBookReview and Blog Tour for MILLION DOLLAR MARRIAGE by Katy Evans!

Million Dollar Marriage by Katy Evans

Release Date: July 23, 2019

Million Dollar Marriage, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by Katy Evans.

If someone had bet Nell a million dollars that she would be saying “I do” to a complete stranger on national television, she’d have called them crazy, but with her crushing student loan payments sending her deep into the red, she’s out of options. This should be nothing more than a business transaction—until she sets eyes on her groom, and everything changes.

The game is on the instant Luke spots Penelope “Nell” Carpenter. He’s out for the money, yes, but getting a little dirty with Nell doesn’t sound too bad either. Everyone knows he’s not the marrying kind, so it’s a good thing it’s just for show. God knows he’s the worst guy his pretty wife should pick for real.

They have nothing in common, but if they want the grand prize, they’ll have to beat out eight other couples. Proving that total opposites attract should be easy enough…as long as they don’t fall in love in the process.

Million Dollar Marriage (Million Dollar, #2)Million Dollar Marriage by Katy Evans
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

5 out of 5 ‘Fake it ’til you make it’ Stars

I always love reading Katy Evans because she is just so darn consistent. When I’m feeling out of sorts I pick up her books to get me back where I want to be….I like the consistency. I like that boy meets girl and falls for her and sees no one but her and pursues her until they both combust and there’s no cheating, no doubting, a little bit of drama (of course) and then happily ever after. I am a total sucker for her style.

Now with that being said the only thing I truly wasn’t a fan of in this story was the female main character, Penelope. Well, she preferred to be called “Nell.” First of all, if you have a kicka$$ name like Penelope why on earth would you want to be called Nell?!?!?!?! Nell!! I just don’t get it. Nell. Pffttt!! Ok ok, I’m over it now. A little. Ok, I’m not but I’m moving on. And I liked that Penelope was nerdy and stayed true to herself and stood up for what she believed in- no matter how ridiculous. But I wasn’t in love with her. I honestly didn’t see what was so awesome about her that made the leading man, Luke, go head over heels for her. But whatever I still enjoyed the story even though I wasn’t a huge fan of Penelope (I refuse to refer to her as “Nell”).

Luke, on the other hand, was totally amazing. He grew up with a difficult childhood followed by an even worse young adulthood. Made a lot of bad choices and managed to pull himself out the other end (with a little help from his grandfather). But even still, he was mostly super positive and upbeat even when the going got tough. He was social and friendly, even when Penelope was being a total jerk. And even though he was the one that was painted in the worse light (due to his past) he seemed a better person than Penelope. I almost felt like he was too good for her in some ways. But towards the end, Penelope started to get her shit together and rethink her ways and she changed some.

The ending was a touch predictable but as I said….I’m totally a sucker for the way Katy Evans delivers her stories. And this is the second in Million Dollar series but you do not have to read the first in order to enjoy this book. I didn’t and there was no difficulty following the story. A total standalone. Luke alone made this story so worthwhile.

Blog Tour-3.jpg

I’m going to lose my lunch.

It’s the live finale the entire country has been waiting for. The arena is packed to the gills with reporters, cameras pointed at us. Flashbulbs go off, and my future seems to flash through my eyes with them.

Everything depends on what will happen in the next hour. We could give our answer in a split second, but not now. I know the announcer will drag things out to the point of sheer madness. Recaps of poignant moments from the season, interviews with contestants, performances by “special celebrity guests” who are also fans of the show.

It’s all meant to build up to the moment of truth. Every one of the people in this arena, every one of the thirteen million people watching at home—they’re all waiting on the edge of their seats with the same question.

Will they . . . or won’t they?

I wish to god we could just give our answer and be done.

He’s so close, but he might as well be a million miles away. Our fingers entwined, he waves at the crowd cheering our names. His hand isn’t the least bit clammy. I manage a peek at him, his chiseled features, his relaxed smile, and my throat catches.

No wonder the world is in love with him. No wonder he’s been the fan favorite since week one.

This is it. The end. Or . . .

I look over at him and say, “Luke . . . I’m not . . .”

He shakes his head almost imperceptibly. “It’s okay,” he murmurs, his fingers stroking my palm. “Breathe, Penny. Just breathe.”

So I do. But air is not the only thing I need to make me okay right now.

We’ve been through so much, more than most couples will go through in entire lifetimes.

And now we’re about to make the decision that will shape our future.

To think, seven months ago, I didn’t even know Luke Cross. Three months ago, I despised him. But somewhere along the line, things changed.

Somewhere along this crazy little adventure we’ve been having, played out on television for the entire world to see, I did what I told myself I’d never do.

I don’t even know how it happened, but as I look back, it seems so inevitable. Like I couldn’t have stopped it, even if I’d tried.

But just because it was meant to happen doesn’t mean it will last forever . . .
